What Does a Wedding Photographer Do the Day Before a Wedding?
When people think about wedding photography, they picture the big moments—the first look, the ceremony, the dance floor.
But what most couples don’t see is everything that happens the day before the wedding to make sure those moments are captured seamlessly.
Because the truth is… a smooth wedding day starts long before I ever pick up my camera—especially for weddings here in Southeastern Wisconsin, where timelines, venues, and lighting can vary a lot from location to location.
It Starts With a Plan
The day before your wedding, I’m not guessing—I’m preparing.
I print out:
- Your finalized timeline
- Your custom photo list
- Any important documents you’ve sent over
These go straight into my fanny pack so they’re with me all day—whether we’re at a downtown Milwaukee venue, a lakeside ceremony, or a barn wedding tucked away in the countryside.
While I don’t typically reach out the day before (because it’s already a busy, emotional time), I’ve already checked in one month and one week prior to make sure we’re completely aligned.
And if you do need me last minute? I’m always just a text away.

Prepping the Gear (and Then Prepping It Again)
This is one of the most important parts of my job—and one you’ll hopefully never have to think about.
The day before your wedding, I’m:
- Charging what feels like a million batteries
- Packing camera bodies, lenses, flashes, and stands
- Cleaning lenses
- Organizing memory cards
- Prepping backup gear
On your wedding day, I always have:
- Two camera bodies
- My go-to lenses: 28–70, 70–200, and my favorite 85mm
From bright outdoor ceremonies to dimly lit receptions (which are very common at Wisconsin venues), I’m ready for anything.
Getting Into the Right Headspace
The day before your wedding isn’t just about gear—it’s about you.
I go back through my notes to remind myself:
- What moments matter most to you
- What you’re excited about
- What you might be feeling going into the day
I also research your venue ahead of time—often from the moment you book. I look at layouts and lighting so I can walk in confident.
If you’ve scheduled a venue walkthrough with me, this is where that prep really pays off.
The Real Behind-the-Scenes Routine
Here’s what my day before a wedding actually looks like:
- Coffee (always)
- Charging batteries all day and night
- Packing and organizing gear
- Prepping my fanny pack with timelines + documents
- Double and triple checking everything
I also prep for myself:
- 40oz water bottle
- Protein bars
- Professional outfit ready to go
I try to relax—but I’m also genuinely excited for your day.
By 10pm, I’m in bed with my alarm set, ready to wake up, grab coffee, and do one final gear check before heading out.
Why This Prep Matters for You
Here’s the goal:
You never have to worry about your photographer.
You shouldn’t be thinking about:
- Whether I have the right gear
- If I know the timeline
- If things will run smoothly
Because I’ve already taken care of it.
This level of preparation means:
- I show up calm and ready
- I’m prepared for any lighting or timeline changes
- Your photo list is already in motion
- You can stay fully present in your day
The Result: Natural, Candid Wedding Photos
All of this preparation allows me to focus on what matters most—capturing your day as it naturally unfolds.
The real moments.
The candid reactions.
The emotions you didn’t even realize were happening.
That’s what makes your wedding photos feel like you.
